Green Hydrogen at the Forefront: Sri Lanka's Path to a Sustainable Future through Science and Technology Policies

The National Science and Technology Commission (NASTEC) is an apex body in Sri Lanka responsible for advising the government on formulating science and technology policies, plans, and strategies. Governed by a seven-member commission appointed by the President of Sri Lanka for a three-year term, NASTEC plays a crucial role in shaping the country's science and technology landscape. One of NASTEC's core mandated activities is convening the Biennial Conference on Science and Technology (BICOST), a platform for discussing science and technology in relation to the country's objectives for economic development and quality of life improvement.

Biennial Conference on Science and Technology (BICOST)

As per Section 5(e) of the Science and Technology Development Act of 1994/11, BICOST aims to promote science and technology as an integral part of Sri Lanka's efforts to achieve rapid economic development, improve quality of life, and alleviate poverty. The conference encourages and supports the development of indigenous technology for growth in the industry, agriculture, and other services, and fosters cooperation between Sri Lankan scientists and their international counterparts.

Renewable Energy, Green Hydrogen, and Energy Storages

One of the thematic areas discussed during the two-day conference was Renewable Energy, Green Hydrogen, and Energy Storages, chaired by Senior Professor Ajith De Alwis. Green hydrogen, a rapidly growing sector within the renewable energy industry, was identified as a prime area of focus for Sri Lanka's development and regaining its place among rapidly growing Asian economies.

Policy Document and Recommendations

A policy document outlining recommendations for the advancement of renewable energy, energy storage, and green hydrogen was prepared and opened for discussion and alterations during the two-day conference. The policy document highlights key areas in which policy-level involvement is required to foster growth and development in the renewable energy, green hydrogen, and energy storage sectors.

Handover Ceremony

At the end of the conference, the policy document on Renewable Energy, Green Hydrogen, and Energy Storage was ceremoniously handed over to a minister representing the government as a policymaking hub. This marked a significant step towards incorporating these sustainable and innovative technologies into Sri Lanka's science and technology policies, plans, and strategies.
